This is why I came. What a view! Stevens Gulch in all its glory, the McClellan/Edwards/Grays ridge sweeping beautifully above. Who could resist?

After Ganley there's stil a whole lotta ridge ahead. Over McClellan, Edwards, and then I'll try to bail from the ridge before reaching Grays (and do a poor job of it). If I survive I'll try to talk myself into "zipping up" Kelso for dessert.

Grays & Torreys as seen from the south ridge of Kelso Mountain. Its a lovely day in the high country but since I forgot my water and opted to do the hike with only half a thermos of coffee and two tiny cutie oranges for hydration I can't say that I am enjoying it to the fullest at this point. I'm distracted by trying to decide which tasty beverages I will be buying at the Georgetown gas station.

My path down Mount Edwards. Not my brightest moment. I should have gone down from the Edwards/Grays saddle but instead I bailed just below the summit... it looked quite unpleasant but reasonable. Sure I'd heard about a couloir route in that vicinity (Goat Finger) but it looked dry below me. Hardpan galore. I often stuck to a rock rib beside the shallow couloir on decent 2nd & 3rd class stuff until it cliffed out maybe 800 feet below the summit. Not having my axe (!) I avoided the snow like the plague and had to do some 3rd or easy 4th class scrambling to escape when the couloir narrowed and the snow became unavoidable.
