  • The technical part of our route to the top of "Island in the Sky" in what is known as the Sand Dunes Area. P1 is the first pitch of Will's Rush (5.5), a full 60 meters. P2 is the first and second pitches of Thousand Pints of Light (5.7); they combine easily if the leader is OK doing a short 5.1 traverse without protection. P3 is the third pitch of Thousand Pints of Lite. There are a bunch of other routes in the area as well. width:640;;height:362
  • The approach is a short, easy scramble. width:640;;height:360

  • Looking up from the start of Wills Rush (5.5), reportedly the first line established in Snow Canyon State Park. This is a trad route with good protection (cracks and small trees). We climbed the first of two pitches (a full 60 meters) to reach the start of Thousand Pints of Lite. width:270;;height:480
  • Dominic completes the first very short pitch of Thousand Pints of Lite, a 5.1 traverse. Instead of belaying from the obvious anchor he clips it for protection and continues onto pitch two. To eliminate rope drag issues that would have arisen from combining the pitches he doesn't clip a fixed pin on the traverse. width:265;;height:480
  • Dominic starts up the awesome varnished face on the second pitch of Thousand Pints of Lite (5.7). This is supposedly a sport route but we were only able to locate a single fixed pin on this pitch. The route description mentions there being two, but even so its pretty runout. Dominic placed a few marginal pieces of pro to supplement the single pin. width:640;;height:392
  • Looking up the juggy face to the next belay. width:640;;height:360
  • Dominic belays me from a small ledge atop P2. width:270;;height:480
  • Looking up P3. More varnish. There were a lot more fixed pins on this pitch. width:640;;height:360
  • Looking north to the highpoint of "Island in the Sky" from the top of Thousand Pints of Lite. width:640;;height:360
  • Investigating a dead end. width:640;;height:360

  • The routefinding on top is quite interesting. width:309;;height:480
  • Dominic approaches the true summit. Thousand Pints of Lite tops out very close to the sub-summit in the background. Getting to here from there is quite the maze puzzle. width:640;;height:360
  • Dominic begins a series of two double rope rappels back to easy ground. width:640;;height:360
