  • Fierce looking "Iroquois" soaks up some early morning light. This is the endpoint of the Mohling Traverse. width:640;;height:479

  • Looking up the ridge toward "Limbo" from Lone Eagle width:360;;height:480
  • The traverse starts on steep, grassy ledges just below the ridge crest width:360;;height:480
  • We depart the Solo Flight route and descend for about 150 feet on the west side of the ridge. Notice the exposure ahead! width:360;;height:480
  • Looking up at "Limbo" from the ledgy traverse. We utilized the obvious ledge just left of center to access Limbo's steep north face. width:360;;height:480
  • Gendarme width:360;;height:480
  • Dominic leads up steep, low 5th class rock below "Limbo". This was the most difficult climbing of the day. The consequence of an unroped slip would be death. Dominic actually backed off of this line and climbed one further right. The pitch wasn't more than 30 meters. width:360;;height:480
  • After Dominic led the crux pitch I led up 60 meters of very exposed 3rd & 4th class terrain complicated by dead grass, snow and ice. Here the difficulty finally relents and Dominic tops out on a small bench as I belay him. width:640;;height:470
  • Me belaying Dominic on the north side of "Limbo". width:640;;height:387
  • Dominic partially coils the rope; the terrain ahead looks easier but we'll keep it out and employ short rope techniques just in case there are some surprises lurking. width:640;;height:480
  • Looking back toward Lone Eagle. Its over 1500 feet down to Crater Lake from here. width:640;;height:480
  • Just below the summit of "Limbo" width:640;;height:480
  • Dominic adjusts the rope during the 4th class scramble to summit of "Limbo" width:640;;height:480
  • Dominic poses in front of "Iroquois", our next objective. Limited beta suggests this next part of the traverse will be tougher than the first. width:360;;height:480
  • Looking back at Lone Eagle and Crater Lake width:640;;height:480
  • Downclimbing Limbo's tricky and exposed summit block. "Limbo" has two distinct summits and we visited both. This western summit, which was the tougher of the two to reach, looked higher to me. width:360;;height:480
  • Mighty North Face of "Iroqious". Looks intimidating, huh? width:360;;height:480
  • Between "Limbo" and the "Limbo" - "Iroquois" saddle we stay near the ridge crest or just off to the west side. The scrambling is never too difficult but the exposure is significant in places. width:360;;height:480
  • North Face of Iroquois. Photo by Dominic. width:640;;height:394
  • Nearing the "Limbo" - "Iroquois" saddle width:360;;height:480
  • "Hopi" width:640;;height:480
  • Vertical drop at the "Limbo" - "Iroquiois" saddle. We did a 25ish meter rappel down the east side to overcome this. Great anchor, great rappel. Notice Dominic on the lower right. width:360;;height:480
  • Exposed step-around after the rappel width:360;;height:480
  • Time to explore the intimidating north face of "Iroquois". Roach says it will probably be the most difficult part of the traverse and we're ready for at least several roped pitches. width:360;;height:480
  • Looking back at "Limbo" width:361;;height:480
  • With proper routefinding the scrambling is a bit chossy but not very difficult. We take our time climbing through loose areas. width:360;;height:480
  • Almost there! Has Roach not done this traverse or did we just do a fantastic job of routefinding? We never need the rope and this part is much easier than the north face of "Limbo"; mostly 3rd & 4th class scrambling with the occasional 5th class move. width:640;;height:480
  • Snow and ice litter the ledges but don't complicate the scrambling too much width:360;;height:480
  • Dominic touches the summit of "Iroquois". We did it! The traverse took us about 3 1/2 hours. width:360;;height:480

  • To get back to Crater Lake we first have to climb over "Hopi"... yipee since I climbed it just yesterday with Kevin width:640;;height:480
