A day of ice climbing in Vail, my first time on near vertical ice
Timber Falls is also known locally as Columbine Falls or Firehouse Falls. There are two waterfalls, the Left Falls and the Right Falls. The Right Falls (pictured here) are encountered first on the short but brutally steep approach.
Unknown lead climber on the Right Falls as seen on the traverse to the Left Falls.
The left side of the Right Falls wasn't fully formed and these impressive icicles hung over an alcove in which we kept our gear.
Wayne pioneering the way up the middle of the Left Falls. Getting off the ground wasn't trivial.
Dominic cranking out his first steep ice climb on the easier right side of the Left Falls! The blue ice here was softer and took points nicely. It was a bit wet in places though.
Wayne and Dominic climbing the Left Falls. We set up three top ropes for the eight of us and took turns climbing and belaying.
I eventually got up the nerve to try some tougher climbing in the middle of the Left Falls. I wasn't sure I'd be able to get off the ground though!
Somehow I managed to climb up through the tricky start doing a slight layback of sorts. It was a lot of fun! I then made it about 2/3 of the way up the route and stopped at the base of a tough pillar I had no desire to mess with!
Mike climbing up thin ice and rock on the far left side of the Right Falls. Most of us did a couple of laps on the ice to his right.
