An easy but long winter hike to the top of a scenic 14er
Ken and Broken Hand Peak as seen from our break spot on the way up to Humboldt's east ridge. We have been blessed with a rare bluebird winter day.
The east ridge is the most logical ascent route in winter. Although the standard south slopes are often (not always) safe from avalanches, it probably isn't worth slogging all the way to South Colony Lakes just to use this route.
Dwight & Ken approaching the summit of Humboldt Peak. The mighty Crestones can be seen on the left.
We enjoyed views of the expansive San Luis Valley as we retraced our steps back down Humboldt's interesting east ridge.
